The philosophies in Star Trek are kinda part of the actual setting. If you don’t get that, why are you allowed to make Star Trek movies.

Sigh. The whole point of Star Trek is that it’s philosophical. If you don’t want philosophical Science Fiction, there’s plenty of that for you to enjoy, but Star Trek is philosophical. Philosophy is part of Star Trek’s DNA, and if you’re given the captain’s chair, you’d better damn well respect that.

International Space Station Leaking Ammonia Coolant, NASA Says

The International Space Station has a radiator leak in its power system. The outpost’s commander calls the situation serious, but not life-threatening.

The six-member crew on Thursday noticed white flakes of ammonia leaking out of the station. Ammonia runs through multiple radiator loops to cool the station’s power system. NASA said the leak is increasing from one previously leaking loop that can be bypassed if needed. NASA spokesman Bob Jacobs said engineers are working on rerouting electronics just in case the loop shuts down. The Earth-orbiting station has backup systems.

Space station Commander Chris Hadfield of Canada tweeted that the problem, while serious, was stabilized. Officials will know more Friday.

The space station always has enough emergency escape ships for the crew, but there are no plans to use them.

Andromeda is a bit bigger than us. So when that happens, Andromeda’s black hole is gonna consume our black hole in a vicious act of galactic canabalism.

Which is an actual term used in astronomy apparently.

“Galactic Cannabalism” sounds like an electro/death metal fusion band.

Galactic cannibalism is one of my favourite astronomical terms, but it doesn’t beat the term used for the stretching out into a long thin tube that occurs when something falls into a black hole (spaghettification) or the term used for a rock thought to be a meteorite but which later turns out to be an ordinary terrestrial rock (meteowrong).

Just want to add that this is modelled in like billions of years and very few actual objects in the galaxies would actually collide, it’s more a case of shifting gravities moving stars and asteroids and dust about.

Buuuut there’s something like a 3% likelihood, depending on the velocity of Andromeda, that our sun could end up being ‘evicted’ into Andromeda during the first collison (before they rebound back together), and then whatever life that’s on Earth would be able to see the whole Milky Way galaxy in our night-time sky

Wolfram|Alpha has a whole collection of line art portraits constructed from complex parametric functions. This is one of the greatest uses of mathematics I have ever come across. This discussion thread suggests that it’s probably done by computers rather than bored grad students (I mean, just look at the equation to get 2pac!!)

I just keep going back to Mafalda Hopkirk. She could so play a great - great granddaughter of her former character in like the final ever episode with the Tenth Doctor. I can just see it now.

I’ve been thinking about this one for ages: what if Filch played this guy who stole dinosaurs on a Silurian spaceship and ended up getting blown up?? That would be epic, he’d be so good in the role.

Mr. Weasly could be Rory’s dad! I know, crazy but it could work so well! I just picture him sitting on the edge of the tardis with a cup of coffee and some sandwiches, looking at the Earth in space.

As much as I’d love to believe this is true, I detect a little post production magic in here. If he did manage to get the balls to all jump to different heights (easily done using basic vector mechanics) how do you ensure that they are all in the right order and in-line relative to the perspective of the camera? Maybe it took a few tries, but it might have come through in the end.

Still, really cool idea.

Reblogging since this is pretty darn cool, and nice of Adobe. CS3 is suiting me just fine but I bet quite a few artists would like to get their hands on this.

Reblogging for all my friends and followers who might be looking for something other than SAI. The site’s temporarily down at the moment, so you can check it later I guess. CS2’s pretty good…I used it for a long time. Most of the added features between versions tend to be workflow tweaks.

Hmm, seems too good to be true. None-the-less, OMG! I’ve always thought this would be a good idea for getting people into using its products. Since it’s functionally the same as the current incarnation of Photoshop, minus the fancy stuff, this would be a totally great idea; since Adobe don’t really make money on it anymore anyway, and it’d spur people into getting the most recent one.

Deepika Kurup, a freshman at Nashua High School South, has won first prize of $25,000 in the 14th annual Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge for a method of purifying water with solar power.

Kurup’s invention uses two chemicals – titanium oxide and zinc oxide – which, when hit by sunlight, undergo a chemical change producing hydroxyl radicals that can attack and destroy certain types of bacteria.

She tested them in various translucent containers heating by parabolic reflectors and found that they reduced populations of various bacteria by large amounts.

Kurup competed alongside nine finalists Tuesday in a live competition at the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, Minn.

She was awarded the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist,” $25,000 and a trip from Discovery Student Adventures.

In addition to presenting their prototypes, the 10 finalists competed in two additional challenges in which they were asked to combine multiple 3M technologies to yield new solutions and build a machine designed to turn on a light bulb using science and engineering principles.

Finalists were evaluated on their scientific knowledge, creativity and use of 3M technology
